DAMPFHAMMER

A highly innovative 2-Liter NA engine!

Engine:

Honda K20A2 engine

Challenges:

The highest possible and widest torque bandwidth of an NA engine

Performance:

306 hp@8300 rpm, 208 ftlb@6800 rpm (flywheel based rating)

Goal

A 2-liter 4-cylinder naturally aspirated engine with more than 260 Nm from 4500-8500 rpm, applicated for hill climbing and auto cross racing.

Restrictions

Budget efficient forged short block internals, stock crankshaft, stock cylinder head.

Procedure

  • Calculation of fluid properties of air, fuel, coolant for the specification
  • 1D-full sized engine simulation to specify design of the alternation of load, mechanical and fuel system
  • 3D-CAD-design of necessary parts, beginning at the inlet at air filter till the outlet of the muffler
  • Specification of design parameters for the assembly like bearing clearances and oil specification
  • Assembly and blue printing of the engine
  • In-operation preparation
  • Break-in and tuning of the engine

Result

  • Peak numbers: 286 Nm/311 PS (208 ftlb/306 hp) at flywheel
  • Specific numbers: 143 Nm/Liter and 155.5 PS/Liter (104 lbft/liter and 153 hp/Liter)
  • Bandwidth: more than 260 Nm in between 4800 and 8500 rpm
  • Highly knock resistant due to an invative technology
  • load response time in a 12 ms for t90 from idle to full load with the fuel control quality of a speed-density-system
  • 3-way catalyst, which aligns to FIA rules and the tune of the engine even to EURO 3-emission limits
  • Idle engine speed at 850 rpm (EURO 3 requirement)

The innovative DAMPFHAMMER technology improves not only the volumetric efficiency, but also the knock resistance and enables high power output in any engine speed of the aimed applications. The lower as state of the art peak power engine speed, keeps building cost and maintenance cost low or opens the door for more.

Outlook

Based on the verificated DAMPFHAMMER technology a follow up project is already ongoing, the DAMPFHAMMER HD. This engine pushes the engine speed bandwidth to 10,500 rpm and peaks at 350+ hp at flywheel.

While the DAMPFHAMMER is a very cost efficient 300+ hp approach, the DAMPFHAMMER HD pushes the limits and uses a highly developed crankdrive, slightly modified cylinder head, a highly modified combustion process design and an adapted DAMPFHAMMER alternation of load system (FIA CAT, 3-way possible, idle speed below 1000 rpm).
